Medications for Dementia
There are no specific drugs approved by the FDA for dementia as such even though drugs may be used in combination to help patients.
• Cholinesterase inhibitors – Tacrine (Cognex), Donepezil (Aricept), Rivastigmine (Exelon) and Galantahamine (Reminyl)
• Antidepressants – Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil and Celexa
• Antipsychotics – Haldol, Risperdal, Seroquel, Zyprexa and Geodon
• Anticonvulsants – Depakote, Tegretol, Neurontin, Lamictal
Since all these drugs cause side effects, their use is to be constantly monitored.
